Alma Lee “Dee” Maxted, 98, formerly of Earl Park, Indiana, died on November 10, 2022, in Germantown, TN.
Born on January 11, 1924, in Parish Grove Township, near Earl Park, she was the youngest of the 11 children of William Grogan and Amelia Steinbach Grogan. Alma Lee was named “Dee” early on by her then toddler sister, Marge, and it became her moniker throughout her life. During her teens on her parent's Parish Grove Township farm, she was afflicted with a potentially crippling bout of polio, but with much effort, made a good recovery.
During the years of World War II, she attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Dee was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the Purdue Freshmen National Honors Society. She also belonged to the Newman Club, was a Distinguished Student, and a member of the Purdue Independent Association. Dee interrupted her education at Purdue to help her brother George on the family farm. She returned to Purdue to finish her degree in Psychology, and after graduation in 1947, she worked for Duncan Electric. She married fiancé Wes Maxted on June 26, 1948, upon his graduation from Purdue. They were wed at Sacred Heart Church in Fowler, Indiana.
The newly-weds soon moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, near where Wes had grown up. In later years, the family relocated to Germantown, Tennessee, in the Memphis area. In addition to bearing and raising 5 children, she worked as a co-partner in her husband's business, Wes Maxted, Inc. They were married for 47 years, and shared love, life, and a passion for golf and dry martinis. Her passion for golf led her to play whenever she could, and she shared that passion by teaching it to her younger sons. Dee also was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. At 92 years young, she rejoiced when the Cubs won the 2016 World Series.
Dee will be remembered as a vivacious and energetic soul, loving life, her family, and friends. She survived the Great Depression, Polio, WWII, and her 10 Grogan siblings. She was greatly loved by her extended family and friends and will be missed by all those who knew her. Dee is survived by 5 children, Lynn, John, Amelia, Jim, and Greg; 7 grandchildren, James, Brian, Kalena, Patricia, Alex, Kevin, and Galen; and 11 great-great grandchildren, Ollie, Elizabeth, Evi, Lauren, Sydney, Shane, EJ, Ethan, Emily, Auri, and Dylan.
Dee will be buried alongside her husband, Wes, who died in 1996. Other family members who rest nearby include her parents, William and Amelia Grogan, brother George Grogan, infant brother John Grogan, sister Marge Grogan, and sister and brother-in-law, Bertha (Bert) Grogan Marshino and George Marshino.
