James T. Rainier, known to family and friends as Jim, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 92, bringing a close to a most remarkable and impactful life that touched all of those around him. Jim was born to the late James N. and Claribel (Trudeau) Rainier.
Jim’s life was a testament to commitment—both professionally and personally. Growing up in Fowler, IN, Jim met and married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Bates, and they raised their 4 children in what was to become their forever home. After graduating from Fowler High School, he proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 as an electronics specialist at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX.
Professionally, Jim was a cornerstone of the local economy. He began his career at Rainier Furniture and after selling the business he transitioned to Rainier Manufacturing where he managed operations for 32 years. Rainier Manufacturing underwent various changes in ownership and under his leadership, the company pioneered innovations such as the first microwave popcorn bags and packaging for well-known brands like Keebler and Nabisco. Jim also served as Chairman of the Board at Fowler State Bank and held positions on the Town Board and County Council.
Jim was a highly active member and supporter of the Benton County Country Club where he was an avid and very capable golfer, and for several years personally maintained the club’s golf cart batteries. He received the prestigious Lafayette Journal & Courier George Award for the countless hours he spent making critical repairs to the only brick road in Fowler. His passion for history, particularly family genealogy and the origins of Benton County often led him to share fascinating tales with family and friends. Spending time with his children and keeping in touch with family, along with his routine of morning coffee shared with his lifelong friends, were among the simple joys that brought him happiness.
He leaves behind a loving family: children Deb (John) Davis, Ann (Andy) Tice, Kitty Cooper, and Brad (Michele) Rainier; grandchildren Josh (Reagan) Davis, Joel (Jason) Davis, Sarah (Jenny) Davis, Jordan Davis, Chris, Jess, and Shawn Tice, Kaiti (Kyle) Olsen, Cole (Katy) Cooper, Lauren (David) Reynhout; great-grandchildren Athan and Atticus Davis, Kinsley and Cooper Olsen, and Teddy Reynhout; brother Joseph Bradford (Jane) Rainier, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy, his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Bob Sheetz, and son-in-law Jeff Cooper.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Benton County Country Club on Friday, Oct. 25th from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Benton County Country Club, 602 W. 4th St., Fowler, IN 47944. The Gertz, Windler & Keller Funeral Home of Fowler, IN, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jim's legacy of dedication, service, and community involvement has left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memory will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
