James A Reed, 75, adjunct professor, of Kirkwood Mo. went to be with the Lord January 18,2023 after battling cancer. Born in 1947 in Crawfordsville, to Glen I. Reed (deceased) and survived by Rose-Marie Reed, of Columbia City, Indiana, he graduated from Oxford high school in 1965 then earned multiple history scholarships from Purdue University where he received his BA and MA in European History in 1970. He then served in Giebelstadt, Germany in the US Army. After returning, Jim continued his education by obtaining an MA in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History from Brandeis University. Jim achieved one of his many awards and achievements while at Brandeis. One of which, Harvard University hired him to translate cuneiform tablets. Jim studied secondary education social studies at Washington University where he earned Missouri Life certification to teach social studies grade 6-12. Jim retired from Harris- Stowe University as an adjunct Professor of World History and other subjects. Jim was an active writer and spent his spare time as a major stamp collector and dabbled in coin collection. Jim loved talking about history and politics. Jim’s favorite quote was “History does not repeat itself, human nature does.” Jim was an active member of the Unitarian Church.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Robinson. He is survived by mother, Rose-Marie Reed of Columbia City Indiana, brother, Michael (Deborah) Reed of Columbia City, Indiana, sister-in law, Helen Kirkpatrick Robinson, orig. from St Louis, along with loving niece and nephew Catherine Scale Johnson and Thomas Kirkpatrick Scales. Also, loving Niece Amber D. (fiancée, Matt Hall) Reed of Watseka, IL and Robin M Reed of Columbia City, IN. Jim is also survived by his great-nephews, Cameron Reed of Kentland, IN, Blake and Sladen Fowler, Keagan Hall all of Watseka, Larissa Catalano of Florida, longtime, loving girlfriend Christine Hickey and her daughter Erin Hickey, Rachel Valenti and son Theo Valenti. Jim is also survived by uncle, Paul Reed, cousins, Mary Anne and Dale Workman, all of Lafayette, David Ade of Utah and cousins, Michelle Workman, Julie Workman Wilson, Jodi Rohier, and Lisa Workman Smith. Graveside service will be held at 11:30 am, May 27, 2023 at Boswell Cemetery, Boswell, IN with Matt Baughman officiating.
