Leonard Neil (Sr.) Herre

Leonard Neil Herre, Sr., age 84, went home to be with the Lord on December 6, 2022.

Leonard was born in Goodland, IN, on December 25, 1937, to the late Otto, Sr. and Delma Mae (Armold) Herre. The Herre family moved near Mt. Ayr, IN in 1940, to farm in Newton Township in Jasper County. Age eight was Leonard’s first experience on a tractor, helping his father farm the land. Leonard and his family moved back to Goodland in 1950, to a small farm on the edge of town.

Leonard attended Goodland High School and participated in varsity sports, playing basketball and baseball and running track. He graduated as Goodland High School’s Class of 1955 valedictorian.

Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Marie Spurlock, on August 3, 1957, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Rensselaer, IN. They moved in January 1958, to a farm in Union Township in Benton County, where they resided for their entire married life.

Leonard is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Carolyn, his sons, Leonard, Jr. of Knoxville, TN, and James of Wolcott, IN, and his daughter, Sondra of Goodland, IN. He dearly loved his two grandchildren, Michael and Jama. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Marvin, Otto, Jr., and Donald Herre.

Leonard devoted his entire life to farming, but his first love was to serve God, his beloved wife, and their three children. He will be profoundly missed by all who loved him.
