Luida Kay Williams, 82, passed away June 28, 2024 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Luida was the daughter of Edgar P. and Velma M. Williams of Fowler. Luida graduated Fowler High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s degree from Butler University, both in education. She is survived by her sister, Vinita Swenty, nephew, Brian Swenty, grand-niece, Emma Swenty and her long-time friend and companion, Gwendolyn Pribble. Her brother, Kirk P. Williams preceded her in death on June 28, 2023.

Luida taught first and second grade for 40 years for the Indianapolis Public Schools. She always placed her pupils' social justice and her family as a priority. She was listed 3 times in the "Who’s Who of American Teachers". Luida was her school’s union representative during her entire teaching career and excelled at contract negotiations. Luida volunteered for the City of Indianapolis summer camp and inner-city youth programs for 20 years and received a plaque honoring her volunteer work. Luida was a civil rights activist, and once marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. Her name has been added to the wall at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Luida was an avid reader and particularly loved books on different cultures such as Mayan, Inca, and Native Americans. She loved to swim and play tennis. Her true gifts were her abilities to communicate warmly and instill hope in others. She will be missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and students.

 A graveside service will be held at the Fowler Cemetery also known as the North Cemetery, 465 W Division Road Fowler, Indiana 47944, Saturday, October 19th 2024 at 1:30pm (EST).
