Richard Paul Brouillette, 90, of Fowler, passed away peacefully surrounded by family September 20, 2024 at Franciscan Health, Lafayette, Indiana, after a brief illness.
Born on April 3, 1934, to Robert and Marie (Bohlinger) Brouillette, Dick grew up on the family farm located west of Fowler and graduated from Fowler High School in 1952. He served in the Army National Guard for four years based in Boswell, Indiana.
He married Connie Hill at St. Mary’s Church, Dunnington, in 1962. They began married life on the family farm where they raised their four children: Elaine, Randy, Amy, and Gail.
It is an understatement to say that farming was in his blood. He thrived on the ups and downs of the annual spring planting and the fall harvests, never minding the long hours. He was blessed to continue actively farming until he was 85 years old. After finally retiring and relocating to Cumberland Pointe in West Lafayette in 2021, one of his greatest joys was being taken on rides by his children to check out the crops. He was especially proud and close with his son Randy who continues the farming operation.
When he wasn’t in the fields, Dick worked as a hail adjustor for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance for 33 years. He enjoyed traveling to swap stories with farmers all over the Midwest. He had many hobbies including fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards, and watching sports, especially the Cubs and Purdue. He looked forward to the annual family fishing trip to Canada which was a tradition started by his father back in the 1960’s. He was also just as content to enjoy morning coffees with his local buddies.
Dick was a proud grandfather and never missed a sporting event for his grandchildren. It didn’t matter if it was T-ball, tennis, basketball, soccer, volleyball, football or golf, traveling all over the state to cheer them on. Dick and Connie also loved taking the whole family on cruises, watching the grandkids swim with stingrays, and hosting everyone in their room before dinner. He had a special relationship with each grandkid, sharing hunting tips or simply listening to their stories.
He is survived by his children: Elaine Brouillette (Dogger Dickey), Randy Brouillette (Julie), Amy Marquie (Scott) and Gail Holzer (Ken), and his sisters: Marge Diener and Lois Ludwig. He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren: Bailey (Shelby), Tessa, Bridgette, Ellie (Andrew Masin), and Annabelle Brouillette; Sophie (Nick) Leuck, Jack, and Betsy Marquie; Simon (Maranda), Grace (Chris Selwood), and Noah Holzer; as well as his great-grandchildren: Asher and Darby Brouillette, Payton, Raegan, and Fletcher Holzer, Henry Leuck and Brooks Masin.
He is preceded in death by his wife and brothers: Joe, Jim, Dave, Bill Brouillette and sisters: Pauline Mailloux and Jeanette Bower.
Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Church Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. (EST), with rosary and the funeral mass immediately following. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fowler, followed by a reception lunch at the Benton County Country Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart School in Fowler, Indiana.
